Description |
Verbena sometimes referred to as vervain, is often grown as an ornamental, but it needs to be kept indoors during winter months in northern regions. Lemon Verbena is also known as Vervain, the herb of enchantment. The leaves and flowering tops of lemon verbena are used in teas and to flavor alcoholic beverages. The plant is also an ingredient in some desserts, fruit salads, and jams. The scent of Lemon Verbena does tend to diminish over time yet still tastes very good as a tea. It is used in perfumery, especially in making toilet water and eau de cologne. |

Common Uses |
As a medicinal plant, the leaves and flowers of lemon verbena have been used as an antispasmodic, antipyretic, sedative, and stomachic. Lemon Verbena is an undervalued medicinal herb that is very useful for its sedative and digestive properties. The high percentage of strong lemon-scented volatile oil contained in the leaves makes it effective in helping to relieve indigestion, bloating and stomach cramps. its calming properties make it an excellent alternative to chamomile tea as a night-time drink, and the strengthening tonic effect it has on the nervous system even makes it useful in helping to counter depression. Lemon Verbena can be taken to relieve feverish colds, stimulate a mild sweet and cleanse the skin. |

History |
Verbena has long been associated with divine and other supernatural forces. It was called "tears of Isis" in Ancient Egypt, and later on "Juno's tears". In Ancient Greece, it was dedicated to Eos Erigineia. In the early Christian era, folk legend stated that Common Vervain (V. officinalis) was used to staunch Jesus’ wounds after his removal from the cross. It was consequently called "Holy Herb" or (e.g. in Wales) "Devil's banether".
Other legends held it that vervain protects people from vampires, by mixing it in a herbal tea, keeping it near you, or using oil extracted from it in a bath.
Vervain flowers are engraved on cimaruta, Italian anti-stregheria charms. In the 1870 The History and Practice of Magic by "Paul Christian" (Jean Baptiste Pitois) it is employed in the preparation of a mandragora charm.
While common Vervai is not native to North America, it has been introduced there and for example the Pawnee have adopted it as an entheogen enhancer and in oneiromancy, much like Calea zacatechichi is used in Mexico.
The generic name is the Ancient Roman term for sacrificial herbs considered very powerful. Pliny the Elder describes verbena presented on Jupiter altars; it is not entirely clear if this referred to a Verbena rather than the general term for prime sacrificial herbs. |
