LG ANTIQUE GRAND TOUR MICRO MOSAIC CASKET, ST. PETER'S

Bernini's masterpiece, the colonade and square that gives specific grandeur to St. Peter's cathedral in the distance, and aptly shown here with the fountains in full flow. A superbly crafted antique Italian Grand Tour souvenir micromosaic like this would have been the pinacle of the tourist trade in souvenirs, c. 1840-60 and represents one of the myriad of amazing sights these very earliest true tourists would have wanted to take home with them. Remember, no photographs yet, the mosaics were done in fine long strands of colored glass, 'tesserae', and are true to the ancient tradition of mosaics that is both haunting and elegant in and among the remains we still flock to Rome to view. Still a perfect souvenir, this casket would be priced triple our price if you found it in the shops of Rome, just beyond the Piazza Navona - perhaps you know the ones, where only a few can be found. Buy them here and pretend you paid 3000 euros for it there if you wish, and your trip is nearly paid in full with the savings! (smile). A superb large casket, this!
Excellent condition lacking the interior lining. The mosaic plaque has absolutely nothing to diminish value or appeal, and crisp beveled ridge is not even nipped, nothing to report! A superb piece with even the enameling in fine condition. Well treasured through time, this one!
