Of course these fountain pen brands are all western and had always paid homage to the Orients in form of Dragon.

But the main point is that, you all know and have experienced the dragon themed fountain pen through the western perspective which is a bit shallow. Let me tell you the difference between the Montegrappa, Montblanc etc brands dragon pen with the Pilots Dragon fountain pen. If you see the Montegrappa, and other brand pens has the dragon separately carved on the pens clip. While the other part such as the barrel is the same factory made.

But if you carefully look the Pilots dragon fountain pen, all the single parts are handmade by the artists. The dragon hand painted on the barrel is made up of Togidashi makie lacquer. This is a very unique style where design is painted in lacquer, gold and silver powder is sprinkled over it. When the lacquer is dry, another coat is applied to the design to fix the powder. Ro-iro-urushi (black lacquer without oil) is then applied over the entire surface. After it has dried, it is burnished briefly with charcoal. The final polishing is done with a cotton wool soaked with Ki-Urushi (crude Urushi). During the process the dragon is painted with the needle shaped brush. The artists draw it in every angle considering the viewers angle. So when you look it, you see the dragon also looking at you. This is an extra ordinary charm of art, only these selected artists have got.

This is very time consuming and the art is on the verge of extinction due to its labor and cost intensive. Not many artists can do it now in Japan.
