Lucas van Leyden was the first Dutch renaissance artist to achieve international renown. When he was a mere teenager, he was already painting masterpieces, including this painting, dated 1508. Here is one of his most famous works, digitally restored to remove the scuffs and scrapes of the past 500 years, printed in fine detail, in full color.

DEPICTING A GAME OF COURIER CHESS

Particularly fascinating in this painting is the unusual chess game in the foreground. Played on a board of 12 by 8 squares, this is the game of "Courier Chess" -- an enlarged chess variant that thrived in Europe for some 6 centuries, between 1200 and 1800. The game is depicted in such stunning detail, that it is a unique resource to chess historians, as well as a scene of great drama in its own right.

ORIGINAL SIZE

Although grand in concept, the original painting measures a modest 13.8 by 10.6 inches (35 by 27 cm). Here it is, printed in that very same size, as close as possibe to the original work. The print is centered on an 18 by 12 inch sheet, with basic information on the borders.
