This auction is for a superb vintage edition entitled “Ludwig Wittgenstein,” subtitled “a Memoir,” by Professor Norman Malcolm, with a biographical sketch by Professor Georg Henrik Von Wright, and a frontispiece portrait of Ludwig Wittgenstein.
It was published by Oxford University Press, of Ely House, London, in 1962.
It is widely acknowledged that the most powerful influence upon the contemporary practice of philosophy has been that of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who died at Cambridge in 1951. One of his friends, Professor Norman Malcolm of Cornell University, provides a remarkably vivid personal memoir of this gifted, difficult man.
Ludwig Wittgenstein, considered by many to be the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century, worked primarily in the foundations of logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language.
He developed two quite different philosophies, each with its own interpretative problems - the early one of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and the later one of the Philosophical Investigations published shortly after his death.
Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is probably the most important work of philosophy written in the 20th century. It first appeared in 1921 and was the only philosophical book-length work that Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) published during his lifetime. It immediately convinced many of its readers and captured the imagination of all.
The book measures 7.75 inches x 5 inches.
The 100 pages are neat with a little light foxing near the covers/rims. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There are some light pencil markings in the text.
The illustrated cover is sound, with minor wear, bumps to the corners and is a little grubby.
A good reading copy of this wonderful vintage edition – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder.
I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
