A particularly high quality edition of the popular Chinese game Luzhanqi (literally, "land battle game"). This clever game is probably derived from the Chinese version of chess, Xiangqi, and also related to the popular Chinese children's game Dou Shou Qi (see our store for those games as well). This is one of China's best loved board games, and makes a special gift for a Chinese friend or board game lover.

This game is also known as Lu Zhan Jun Qi ("land battle army game"), Jun Qi ("army game"), Chinese Army Chess, Land Battle Chess and even Tezhi Luzhangqi ("specially made land battle game").

The fun of this game is the mystery of not knowing your opponent's pieces as you play. It is played much like our western game Stratego, but usually adds the element of a third person who serves as "referee," letting the two players know the outcomes of their battles without ever revealing the identities of their pieces. The suspense continues throughout the entire game! It can also be played by just two players with a slight variation, if no 3rd person is available.

An Exceptional Set

The traditional Luzhanqi set consists of small wooden pieces on a folding paper playing mat -- but this one is much better. The board is 14 by 10 1/2 inches when open, deep wood tone with playing lines in gold paint. It is made of smoothly finished pressed wood (MDF) and hinges in the center to hold the playing pieces in two felt lined compartments. It is secured shut by a hidden magnet. The solid urea resin pieces are 15/16 inch (2.4 cm) wide.

It's rare enough to find a good edition of this game outside of China, but it's even more rare to find an accurate edition of the rules in English. This set comes complete with a clear and concise illustrated pamphlet, laying out the rules in plain English.
