This fine clock is an 1820’s to 1830’s Lancaster County Tall case clock.  This clock has the very desirable feature called.  “Four hands on Center”.  This means that it has keeps the Date, Hour, Minute, and has a Sweep Seconds hand.  It rings a Bell on the Hour. This unique case is made of Cherry Wood, banded in Mahogany.  The dimensions are 8 ft. 8” High X 22” Wide X 11” Deep.

Lancaster County is very well know for it's many clock makers in the Late 1700's and 1800's.  Some of the most famous being Christian Eby, Christian Forrer, Jacob Gorgas, and John Hoff.

 

George Ford (Lancaster) B. Mar. 1, 1773, D. April 17, 1843. 

 

Ford appears as a clockmaker in Borough tax records from 1807 to 1836. 

 

His father was Peter Ford, a clockmaker who came to America from Liverpool, England, and settled in York County, Pennsylvania. 

 

In 1806 George Ford married Mary Elizabeth Hall, a daughter of Lancaster silversmith  Charles Hall.  She was also a granddaughter of clockmaker Abrum Laroy. 

 

Ford lived on the north side of the first block of West King Street, a few doors from the shop of John Hoff.
