Fire! Patty Learns What to Do

Length: 16 Minutes | Produced:1951

In Fire! Patty Learns What to Do, filmmakers use the tragic Chatsworth California fire of 1947 to give fire safety instruction. At the time, San Fernando Valley lost 50 homes to the fire damage, which was finally extinguished on the Garman family farm. The film focuses on how the Garmans, including their children, helped to stop the fire. The Los Angeles fire chief illustrates techniques and rules for fire prevention training geared toward children. In one scene describing fire hazards, he does so by lighting a doll on fire! Don McNamara, narrator, advises children to expect fires after earthquakes and atomic bombings, hinting at the post world war 2 a-bomb hysteria. Fire! Patty Learns What to Do is a sweet bit of vintage Americana thats great for improving family safety and preventing burn injuries.

Crimes of Carelessness

Length: 9 Minutes | Produced:1950s

A quaintly dated fire safety film, Crimes of Carelessness enumerates the causes, dangers, and prevention methods for fires. According to the film, fire can strike anywhere at anytime: fire hazards are as ubiquitous as leaves on trees! Every year, fires destroy cities, forests, and homes, killing or injuring nearly 50,000 people. Fire accidents can be caused by putting a cigarette in the trash or throwing a cigarette from a car; children playing with matches; and people leaving electrical devices on without supervision. Steps towards prevention are easy! Use an ashtray. Keep matches away from children. Turn off electrical appliances after usage. Have the heating system checked once a year before the winter season. Do not smoke in bed. Lastly, keep the number of the fire department readily available in case of an emergency. Crimes of Carelessness is a fun vintage film that still contains valuable safety lessons for preventing burn injuries and fire damage.

Just a Spark

Length: 9 Minutes | Produced:1937

This is a Chevrolet promotional video disguised as a forest fire prevention film, a popular promotional technique at the time. Good old Pierre is coming back from fishing with a friend when his friend throws a cigarette butt in a pile of leaves, carelessly. Anything can be a fire hazard. The butt starts a fire and this fire burns big and spreads all over. Rangers see the smoke and report it in to headquarters before hopping into their Chevrolet automobiles and heading out to fight the fire and prevent fire damage and burn injuries! Headquarters sends out 100 firefighters - thats a lot of Chevys! The fire spreads quickly. Pierre must reach his bedridden wife before their house goes up in flames! Containing all the characteristics of a melodrama, Just a Spark is a touchstone promotional video that decries the evils and consequences of carelessness (what causes forest fires) while espousing the benefits of Chevrolet.

The Story of a Forest Ranger

Length: 27 Minutes | Produced:1954

The position of Forest Ranger requires the employee to be capable of accomplishing many tasks. In The Story of a Forest Ranger the viewer gets to follow the ranger as he demonstrates the many different challenges and obligations that are part of forest ranger requirements. To earn the distinguished position of a Forest Ranger one must have proper education through college studies and practical application. Beyond these things is a deep thirst for knowledge of the outdoors and wild animals, and a curiosity about the planet. These characteristics help make a good forest ranger. But the film also examines more than these basic skills, because being a forest ranger involves many activities. Organizing and supervising the logging of trees is part of the position that helps to maintain a healthy forest. Another position is the management of the water system to ensure that plants and animals are well provided for and to preserve the land so that erosion does not occur. Timber management is a difficult task that sometimes requires riding on horseback to reach remote locations. Forest rangers are defenders of wildlife, and as such must make wildlife conservation and nature care a priority. Being a forest ranger truly is one of the best wildlife careers. Another aspect of being a forest ranger is to help prevent and fight forest fires. Forest fires can be very devastating and can temporarily ruin the ecosystem of the forest. To ensure that these are prevented, Forest Rangers must educate visitors on forest fire prevention and fire safety in the woods. If a forest fire does occur it is their job to act quickly to minimize the damage that may occur. As preservationists, forest rangers will use fire safety equipment to ensure a well protected forest. While much of the life of the forest ranger is spent outdoors it requires many skills. A forest ranger is part teacher, part preservationist, and also part business person. It is not a job for everyone, but a forest ranger career can be a rewarding occupation for a person who adores nature and approaches outdoor care with competence and knowledge.
