Led Zeppelin "Rock and Roll" original artwork montage

Led Zeppelin were an English rock band that formed in September 1968. Led Zeppelin consisted of Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), John Paul Jones (bass guitar, keyboards) and John Bonham (drums, percussion). With their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin is regarded as one of the first heavy metal bands. Their rock-infused interpretation of the blues and folk genres also incorporated rockabilly, reggae, soul, funk, classical, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, pop, Latin, and country. The band did not release the popular songs from their albums as singles in the UK, as they preferred to develop the concept of album-oriented rock.

Close to 30 years after disbanding following Bonham's death in 1980, Led Zeppelin continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including 111.5 million sales in the United States and they have had all their non-compilation studio albums reach the U.S. Billboard Top 10. Led Zeppelin are ranked No. 1 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time" and "the biggest band of the 70s".

Based on the artwork of esteemed westcoast artist Peter Robertson

A few words from the artist - Peter Robertson

The beginning of April 2008 found the completion of the 10th illustration in my ongoing musically based series. Each is done in pen-and-ink and takes me approximately 150-200 hours. This particular piece is dedicated to the hardest rocking blues-based band of all times - Led Zeppelin. Formed as a Super group in 1968 by Jimmy Page it's members included himself, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and the late John Bonham. As important a part of Led Zeppelin as it's rhythm section was I decided to feature the two front-men and song-writing tandem of Jimmy Page on the left and Robert Plant on the right. This was done with space limitations in mind together with my search for the perfect composition. In every piece I have done so far I've included an animal (or animals), a Butterfly, and a Diamond. Also included in each piece are at least one Bass Clef and at least one Treble Clef along with other musical notations, in this case predominantly one particular musical note. The piece is called "Rock and Roll" after the second song on the group’s Fourth (untitled) album. The first 5 words of the song are there to represent the obvious but also that it is 40 years ago since this amazingly talented crew joined forces. Along Time Indeed!!! The Butterfly represents metamorphosis of creativity and in a graphic way both Page and Plant are "Thinking" the Butterfly motif. To the right of Page's left hand is a stylized "9". At the bottom under the Black Lab's muzzle is the sign of Capricorn. These combined with the "1944"combine cryptically to announce Jimmy Page's birth date. It could only be January 9th, 1944. The " 20" to the right of the Diamond combined with the sign of Leo (to the left of Plant's head-shot and the year "1948" are thereto represent Robert Plant's birthday, August 20th, 1948. The Black Lab is thinking "Black Dog"- the first song on the aforementioned album. The dog’s neck has the Treble Clef tattooed into its fur.  The Diamond indicates” Brilliance" of which there is no doubt that this group strived for and achieved. The Diamond is also "Thinking"- "To Be A Rock... And Not To Roll"-one of the last lines that Robert Plant sings at the end of what a lot of people believe to be the best rock anthem of all time- "Stairway to Heaven”. The "J" and the "P" are for the first two initials of Jimmy Page's name and the "R" and the "P" are for the first two initials of Robert Plant's name. Enjoy!
