The 8x42 BN is absolutely the BEST pair of general purpose or hunting binoculars ever created. The FOV is incredible, an AMAZING 7.4 degree FOV (nearly 400 ft. @ 1000 yds) in an 8 power, wider even than most 7 power, and with perfect edge-to-edge clarity. Acquire moving objects with ease and precision, or gather in that view of the whole flock. The technology that went into giving this type of optic required intense R&D and the most difficult manufacturing processes; it took around a year to make a set of lenses for this model.

The other great quality you get in this model, which all midrange binoculars lack (even if they claim with some justice that the optics are 'almost' as good) is the (corundum) hard coating. The lenses will stand up to days in the field and some wiping down without being ruined. Tell me about it -- my own regular pair of tagalong glasses are a pair of Brunton 7.5x43 (another great housing design, more on the Leica's in a sec) lack a hard coating and are woefully scratched up just from sweeping through the bushes, being set down, you know, regular use. This sapphire-coated Leica set will far outlast you and your offspring.

The color correction of the full phase coating on this (and other Leicas) is on the cool side, which tend to reward blues, whites, greens, and other cooler colors. The colors tend to look 'truer' than other German/Austrian optics that favor the yellow spectrum. Although, unless you are very experienced, you frankly won't notice. Colors simply look extremely vivid in daylight conditions, which is one reason birders tend to like these.

What else can we say? Well, how about dry nitrogen pressurized, watertight to 5 meters. How about durable metal pop-out eye cups (not plastic). Full tactile rubber armoring, painless click-out diopter adjustment, buttery smooth and lash-free focus, and CLOSE focus of 10 ft!

Already amazing, and we haven't even gotten to the best...

The aluminum/magnesium housing on these are the toughest in the business. No kidding. My brother dropped his 10-power Leica out of a tree blind, and they were perfectly fine when recovered. Nothing dented or misaligned. He won't buy anything else. Talk about rough handling. These binocs will be yours forever because they will simply never fail you.

So okay, there are a lot of great glasses out there, but what about the cost? What about the field reports? The report on the BN has been in for years, and they are the most desired pair ever marketed, and guess what, they don't make them anymore. The replacement Ultravids are indeed very nice, yes, but run closer to $2000. This pair is a bona fide legend, and how about this, it COSTS LESS. Depending on the model, maybe around half.
