Movie description
In 1989, Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki helmed a film called LENINGRAD COWBOYS GO AMERICA, which followed the fortunes of a foreign rock & roll band as they toured the USA. A sizeable cult hit, the film picked up many plaudits and helped establish Kaurismaki as a name to watch. In 1994, Kaurismaki focused his attention on the Leningrad Cowboys once again, as they played a remarkable show to celebrate the ending of the Cold War. The Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble also played, with the two wildly different acts pulling an incredible crowd of 70,000 people. Captured here on camera, watch the astonishing events as they unfold, with the undoubted highlight coming when the groups join forces to work their way through a unique version of "Stairway to Heaven."

Rock meets traditional folk music in this most unusual of concert films.

It was 1993, on Senate Square in Helsinki, Finland, when the Leningrad Cowboys joined the Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble for a unique blend of music and spectacle. The Leningrad Cowboys are an American influenced Finnish showband that likes to parody the clichés of rock stardom (look for their over-the-top Elvis-esque hairdos), while the Red Army Ensemble was formed to preserve Russian folk music.

The event drew 70,000 people, and involved two nations, Finland and Russia, that were at war a half a century ago and then endured a "peaceful coexistence" during the Cold War. Director Aki Kaurismäki (Leningrad Cowboys Go America, The Man Without a Past) effectively captures the glorious, hilarious, and poignant splendor of this weird, wild show.

What might seem like an impossible combination of musical styles and tastes actually becomes a sublime cosmic experience, especially when the Red Army musicians pick up their balalaikas (the traditional 3 stringed instrument of Russia) to join the Cowboys on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."
