Inspired by the neolithic Stiff White Lady often found in graves and always associated with death. This version is from south Greece, the area of Sparta and the Peloponnese, 6th millenium BCE. (BCE stands for Before Common Era.)
This ancient image of the Death Crone as White Lady survived into modern times in the folk memory or collective unconscious. For example, in the folk song about Halloween / Samhain, "Now the Leprous White Lady leads her train of the lost, through plain and wood and goodly fields of frost." And of course the most famous modern example, in Coleridge's the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner the "Leprous White Lady" is used as a symbol for atheism, "Life-in-Death", inverting the function of the Death Mother as renewer of life into a Xian image of Woman as Anti-Spirit. Reclaim the Crone from the patriarchy, give her a place on your altar!
