Synopsis: It's surprising to discover that Jackie Chan produced Stanley Kwan's ghost story, but then it's equally surprising that with such an intriguing premise this never got snapped up for a Hollywood remake: after waiting 50 years for her lover to join her in the afterworld after their suicide pact, Anita Mui's prostitute returns to a very different Hong Kong to find him with the help of a couple of newspaper employees.

It's at its best in the sensual 1920s sequences, where the ill-fated Leslie Cheung is at his most charismatic and appealing: the modern-day plot, with its lovers realising that happiness is more important than a great love while Mui's spirit finally comes to terms with her death seems somewhat underdeveloped by comparison, although the final sequence is at once both effectively unsentimental and genuinely touching.
