Letter 1863 - History, Battle of Hastings; Cinque Ports

Very lenghty letter dated London, June 16, 1863 from George Morey to a friend. Although the writing is very small and close together, it is very readable. Fascinating content! He was in London awaiting the right time for surgery on his jaw and was advised by his physician to go to the area of Cinque Ports, which he did. While there, he became immersed in the history of this area and this letter is an accounting of all he learned and more. It begins with Cinque Ports, moves to the Battle of Hastings and ends with the history of Hastings and St. Leonards-on-the-Sea - "a beautiful watering place." He also describes some of the buildings - particularly in Hastings - in great detail. Example: The year following that [Battle of Hastings] in which a great victory was won by William, he [the Duke of Normandy] commissioned an abbey upon the site, where the battle raged most fiercely. The high altar of its church being on the precise spot, where the body of Harold was found." Bracketed information is for clarity and not in the actual quote. He writes of royalty that has stayed at the hotel where he is staying. " . . . stopped three weeks at the new Hotel called 'The Lord Warden Hotel' our room looked out on the pier. The Princess Alexandra now Princess of Wales stopped at out hotel over night and the next morning went on Board of the steamer for Calais. She was on her return to Copenhagen having made a visit to Queen Victoria. A week or two afterwards, the Prince of Wales, on his return from his extended tour on the continent landed at our pier from the steamer from Calais." 3 folded pages - 12 sides.
