This design is nicknamed "The Windmill" and is an exceptionally beautiful and unique engine.  It uses five 1/4" dia. single acting pistons with 1/2" strokes.  The "wobble" style valving means that every cylinder is in a constant oscillating motion while running. This means lots of external motion and makes the engine very fascinating to watch. The main shaft runs in ball bearings. The Windmill is completely self starting and only 5 psi of pressure is required.  The diameter around the outside of the five cylinders is four inches. The intake is a 1/8" O.D. brass pipe and can easily be adapted to your boiler or lubricator system.

Building it:

The Liney-5 is a perfect project for someone with a CNC mill. Don't let that stop you though. It can be built with manual equipment as well. The freedom to alter the shape of the frame leaves lots of room for creativity and customization. I would rate this as an intermediate level difficulty project. If you do not have CNC, a rotary table will be important. With these schematics you can build a 2,3,4, or 5 cylinder version.

Like all Liney Machine engines, no castings are used.  We design all our engines to be built from commonly available metal bar stock.  The available kit (see our Ebay store) represents a good value by putting all the materials you will need together for you.  It also includes these plans.  Buying all the material and hardware separately would probably cost more and take many hours to locate and buy.

These plans are CAD drawn with clear easy to read dimensions.  Please bear in mind that these are technical drawings not machining how-to instructions.  There are often many viable approaches to making a part.  That challenge is left up to you.
