These are the first 2 books in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, softcovers from Harper Trophy, occasional illustrations by Brett Helquist, this edition with some supplementary material by the author, ages 9-12, list price $6.99 each,  perfect giftable condition, brand new.   I have a number of pairs of chapter books for this age with combined shipping deals so your child can try different authors/series at a reasonable price.
