This is a lot of 2 books, regarding World War II. The first is The Naked and the Dead, by Norman Mailer. The second book is Band of Brothers, by Stephen E. Ambrose. ISBN 074322454X. The Mailer book is in excellent condition. Band of Brothers has been read a few times, and has a small tear on the top of the front cover. Both covers on this book want to curl. Synopsis
Told in four parts, the book describes the American takeover from Japan of an island in the South Pacific during World War II. Many military details, combined with intermittent narrative about the characters, offer a microcosm of United States political and social history. These various characters must work together in order for their mission to succeed. The novel explores social cohesion, the military mind, class conflicts, and political ideology.

Publisher's Note
Hailed as one of the finest novels to come out of the Second World War,
The Naked and the Dead received unprecedented critical acclaim upon its publication and has since enjoyed a long and well-deserved tenure in the American canon. This fiftieth anniversary edition features a new introduction created especially for the occasion by Norman Mailer.

Written in fascinating detail, the story follows a platoon of foot soldiers who are fighting for the possession of the Japanese-held island of Anopopei. Composed in 1948 with the wisdom of a man twice Mailer's age and the raw courage of the young man he was, The Naked and the Dead is representative of the best in twentieth-century American writing.

Industry reviews
"Strikes me as being by far the most impressive piece of fiction to date about Americans in the Second World War."
Atlantic Monthly - J. Rolo (06/19/1948)

"Undoubtedly the most ambitious novel to be written about the recent conflict, it is also the most ruthlessly honest and in scope and in integrity compares favorably with the best that followed World War I. Even in its repetitiveness, wordiness, and overanalysis of motive, it is a commanding performance by a young man of twenty-five whose gifts are impressive and whose failures are a matter of reach rather than grasp....'The Naked and the Dead' is not a great book, but indisputably it bears witness to a new and significant talent among American novelists."
New York Times - David Dempsey (05/09/1948)

"An impressive and in many ways a highly satisfactory novel about combat in the Second World War, but it shares the tendency of most current novels toward undersimplification. It is too long and it is too complicated....[Mailer's] age has no bearing that I can see on the fact that he is a man of wisdom and perception, who tells a good story powerfully and well."
New Yorker - John Lardner (05/15/1948)

"For a book which seems spontaneous on the surface, 'The Naked and the Dead' was written mechanically. I studied engineering at Harvard, and I suppose it was the book of a young engineer."
Paris Review - Norman Mailer
