Beautiful, working Freshman Masterpiece wood radio model 550 manufactured around 1935 by the Belmont Radio Corp. of Chicago, Illinois. This radio plays standard broadcast and limited short-wave. I have never seen this model before, but it certainly is beautiful, with it's burled walnut front accented by a nice inlay. The ends feature sculpted and carved layers. Truly an astounding radio. Though the radio has plenty of volume I was only able to pick up the strongest local stations. This radio would make an excellent addition to any collection and is a real showpiece. CHASSIS: Though I did not do the chassis work, it appears to be a professional job, and all capacitors were changed out including the filters. The chassis is clean and free of rust. It has a new safe power cord. The speaker is in excellent shape, no tears, and has excellent sound and volume. ABOUT THE CABINET FINISH: My whole lacquer finishing process takes approximately 3 weeks, from the first coat of lacquer to the final rub. I build up about 12 to 15 coats of lacquer over a week long period, with a light wet sanding using 800 grit sandpaper on every third coat. When I feel I have built up enough lacquer, I begin wet sanding with 1000, 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I again apply 3 more coats of lacquer, then wet sand with 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I then rub out the finish with fine cut rubbing compound, and finally a super fine glazing compound. No wax. As you can see, it’s more than an afternoons work applying a few glossy coats of lacquer. I use a professional spraying system and buy my lacquer by the gallon. (no spray-cans, except for toning, and I never use brushes) And of-course, I use only Mohawk professional grade Nitrocellulose lacquers on my cabinet work. Nitrocellulose lacquers were used in the original factory finish. I never use water-based lacquers or any Polys, Glazes, Synthetics, etc. etc. This is 100% pure Old-Time Hand-Rubbed Lacquer! The results are magnificent! DETAILS: The original knobs and were meticulously cleaned and buffed. The smaller right knob has a small chip. New felt washers were made for all the knobs. The black and white volume and station selection inserts are my own replacements, matching the originals. Both are backlit. The originals were badly worn with age. The speaker cloth is a reproduction matching the original. The radio has it's original wooden back, and it's original label stapled to the bottom of the radio. DIMENSIONS: 14" wide, 8.5" tall, and 7" deep FINALLY: The radio plays loud and clear, with excellent tone. I sell a variety of restored radios, both wood and bakelite, (but mainly wood), from the 30's thru the 50's, so check back often, check out my other listings and be sure to put me on your favorites list. Thanks for looking (and bidding), Larry (note: i carefully pack all my radios in a new box with a plentiful amount of new packing material so you will receive your radio in an excellent, undamaged condition.) GUARANTEE: I OFFER A 30 DAY GUARANTEE ON TUBES, CAPS AND FILTERS.
