	Title: Luba Round Mask, Bird Beak, DR Congo, African Type of Object: Mask Ethnic Group: Luba Country of Origin: DR Congo Materials: Wood, pigment, raffia fibers Approximate Age: Second Half 20th century Dimensions: 15.5 inches Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: chipped ears, minor cracks,and chips in places Additional Information: A wooden round mask displaying a combination of human and bird traits. The eyes and nose are anthroporphic, however a bird beak like is carved in place of mouth. The type of mask is a creation of the Luba eastern. The Luba Eastern live in the Katanga Province in the neighborhood of the Hemba, Buyu, Zela and other Luba subgroups. The most famous of the Luba masks are the round kifwebe mask with striations and white pigment. These Kifwebe masks were made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society that the Luba borrowed from the Songye. "Kifwebe" means "Mask" in the Songye language. Some of these masks are zoomorphic . Other types of masks found among the Luba include a rounded anthropomorphic black mask, a rounded human mask with horns, and a human mask with bird beak with a dark brown patina here illustrated. Luba masks are called mukishi ya kuhakwa. They represent the spirit of death and usually appear as a male-female pair and dance wearing costumes made of animal skins and woven coverings. These dramatic masks are danced by the Luba during the full moon to honor their ancestors and also appear to dance at the funerals of chiefs and nobility. Our mask shows sigs of use.
