This auction is for two reproduction prints from the drawings submitted to the United States Patent office by William F. Ludwig for his first bass drum and cymbal beater pedals. Included are:
- One page from his May 25, 1909 patent for a "Drum and Cymbal Playing Apparatus"
- One page from his April 7, 1914 patent for a "Drum and Cymbal Beater"
William and Theo Ludwig were working drummers in Chicago who also sold Leedy snare drums when William came up with his first bass drum pedal design. Later, when Leedy declined to offer a brass-shelled snare that William had proposed, the brothers began manufacturing their own and Ludwig & Ludwig was off and running. These pedal designs could properly be credited as "father of Speed King."
The stories of these original American drum companies are truly fascinating and I strongly encourage you to check them out! (The managers at today's drum manufacturers could probably learn a few lessons, too...)
There are two separate patent drawings included in this auction and each will be provided on artist quality, acid-free, 60-pound parchment style paper as shown above.

Prints are 8.5" by 11.0" (21.6 by 27.9 cm) in size and are ready to frame for display.
They are packaged in archive-safe, acid-free sleeves and shipped flat in a stiffened mailer to ensure safe arrival.
