Lye Quality

Certified Lye™ sells dry solid lye as 99.99% pure sodium hydroxide microbeads. The remaining .01% of the mass within the canister is water vapor pulled from the air, due to the intense hygroscopic properties of lye. Never leave lye exposed to open air; replace the lid when not in use. If the lid is repeatedly left off of the canister for extended periods of time, the lye microbeads may eventually pull enough water vapor from the air to become moist and the microbeads of lye may cake together.

Certified Lye™ sells an extremely high-quality lye, which is manufactured in the USA and is intended primarily for use in making soap. This food-grade lye meets the FCC and USDA standards for food uses, such as curing olives, hominy, century eggs, lutefisk and poaching German pretzels. Our high-quality lye is preferred when making biodiesel fuel. Lower grades of lye are commonly used as drain openers and as oven cleaners.

Canister Size

Preface

This simple soap recipe is intended for soap makers who already know how to make cold process soap but who want to make soap without having to handle lye excessively. The ingredients for this soap recipe include 20 ounces of lye (sodium hydroxide). This 20-ounce canister of lye is guaranteed to contain exactly 20 ounces net weight of lye, which eliminates the need to measure or excessively handle the lye. When making this soap recipe, all proper safety precautions and soap making procedures should be followed.

Soap Ingredients

• 41 ounces coconut oil (76°)
• 47 ounces olive oil
• 47 ounces palm oil
• 20 ounces lye (exactly 1 canister of Certified Lye™ brand)
• 47 ounces water

About the Soap Made from this Recipe

This soap recipe makes a fabulous natural soap that is approximately 30% coconut oil, 35% olive oil, and 35% palm oil. The lye is discounted to 96%, so 4% of the oils will freely remain unsaponified in the soap. Because Certified Lye™ guarantees the accuracy of the net weight of lye in each canister, there is no need to measure or excessively handle the lye when using this recipe; it simply requires one canister of lye. The combined weight of the ingredients is 202 ounces, which requires a soap pot with an 8-quart capacity to allow extra room for stirring. This soap recipe makes approximately 40 regular size bars of soap. When making this soap recipe, all proper safety precautions and soap making procedures should be followed.
