OFFERED WITH A VERY LOW MINIMUM BID AND NO RESERVE!
In this lot we are offering an exceptionally rare and very early Javanese bronze of the Bodhisattva Vajrapani. This early and rare bronze dates from the Kediri period, post Sriwijaya period, or circa 11th to very early 13th century and just prior to the beginning of the Majapahit Dynasty. It is said to have found in eastern Java, but we have owned this for ten years, having acquired it from the estate of Dr. Maurius Van den Hout who was a Dutch physician here in Indonesia in the years prior to outbreak of WW II.
The primitive quality and difficulties with anatomical proportions is an indicative feature of Javanese made bronzes from this very early period. Made in the lost wax casting manner, the walls are thicker than later bronzes, and this accounts for it rather substantial weight given its size. It measures 16.5 cm in height and the base measures 5 X 8 cm. It weighs 1 kilo, or about 2 pounds.
This is an excavated piece which was carefully cleaned a long time ago. It has an excellent burial patina of various shades of verdigris and light brown. Aside from a small loss at the right corner of the base, the condition is otherwise excellent.
