In the past few years, I have repaired and cleaned several hundred trackballs.

During this time, I have found methods and materials that have proven to work quite well.

Some of my customers have asked what I use and how I do the cleaning and polishing.

THIS KIT IS THE ANSWER

This kit contains enough material to clean and polish your trackball at least twenty times.

With ‘normal’ use, I recommend cleaning and polishing your trackball every 90 days.

Therefore, this kit should help you maintain your trackball for five years.

The purpose of this kit is to allow you to maintain (clean and polish)

your optical trackball to extend it’s life and make it easier to use.

Recommended for use on Microsoft and Logitech optical trackballs

I have not used the polish on other brands or roller type trackballs or mice

So, I do not know the long term effect.

The rest of the materials should work quite well for cleaning any mouse or trackball.

The polishing liquid puts a clear film on the ball, the ball socket, and upper case.

This film (non-permanent) helps it stay clean and protects the finish.

This is much like a good polish to protect the finish on your car.

In some cases, the polish will remove stains such as ink.

The cleaning solution is concentrated and is similar to a mild dishwashing detergent.

You may or may not choose to wear gloves. I do not.

MICROSOFT EXPLORER & OPTICAL TRACKBALLS 

The Microsoft trackball deteriorates with time and use.

The most noticeable changes are the wear on the bearings.

Also, the red ball loses its glossy finish and the finish

on the upper housing shows wear and staining.

It seems odd that the plastic ball would wear flat spots on the steel bearings.

It is the bits of ‘stuff’ that the hand puts on the ball that causes the wear.

I have seen relatively new trackballs that had not been kept clean with well worn bearings.

Conversely, I have seen much older, clean trackballs with less wear on the bearings.

So, the key to extending the life of your optical trackball is to keep it clean.

LOGITECH OPTICAL TRACKBALLS

 The ceramic bearings in the Logitech trackballs do not tend to wear.

They are installed so that they are free to turn if kept clean.

However, if the ball and the area around the bearings are not kept clean,

the ball does not turn as freely as it should.
