DESCRIPTION FROM CRUCIAL BLAST:
Two underground doom metal bands, one from Mexico and the other from Italy, go head to head on this rad split from 2007. Each band has their own distinctly different take on the classic deathdoom sound, with some interesting results.
Mexico's Majestic Downfall are the more traditional of the two bands, playing a style of melodic death-doom that draws from the classic early 90's British sound of early Anathema and Paradise Lost, later era Katatonia and the melodic deathdoom of Celestial Season (the old Dutch band whose drummer would later go on to become known as breakcore/speedjungle maniac Bong-Ra). These three songs come from Majestic Downfall's The First Abyss demo, and are epic slabs of doom that stretch for seven minutes or longer, weaving their way through lush moody melodies, thrash riffs slowed to a lugubrious crawl, gutteral growls, pounding double bass, and one gorgeously doleful guitar lead after another. There are some weird electronic sounds like high pitched synthetic flute-like whistles and other stuff that give the music a quirky bedroom metal vibe at times; interestingly, this is another one-man band, which you don't see all that often in deathdoom, and the sound, while raw, is also surprisingly heavy for having one guy behind all of the instruments. Melodic and catchy, Majestic Downfall often ends up reminding me of a dirtier, low-fi version of Agalloch.
Italy's Ansia take a more experimental approach with their three-part contribution to the split. Opening with a somber piano melody that's juxtaposed with distant recordings of what sounds like children on a playground, Ansia immediately dives into an atmosphere of ominous and obscured mystery; gradually, a crushing melodic doom riff and gasping, croaking death metal vocals fade in, slow and heavy and despondent synths and droning guitars and delayed effects swirling around in a tarpit miasma, akin to suicidal doomsters Deinonychus but far more drenched in desolate wind-tunnel ambience. The first track flows from downer doom crush to morose symphonic strings, and then ends with the dusty crackle of a needle stuck in the run-out groove of old vinyl, which leads straight into the second song. A slightly out of tune guitar plays an eerie folk melody for several minutes, slowly joined by dark throbbing industrial ambience and a rush of backwards tape noise, then evolves into abstract dark ambience, swells of distorted guitar drone intermingling with demonic vocal noises and deep subterranean thrum. The last track returns to the lumbering funereal doom, the vocals now more blackened and miserable, the sound more ambient than heavy; over the tracks fifteen minutes, the music goes from the blackened depressive doom to long stretches of smoldering industrial noise and hallucinatory black ambience filled with moaning voices and deep subsonic rumbles, and back again, at times suggesting a much more doomed Blut Aus Nord.
