After years in the bands Little Red Rocket and Azure Ray, Maria Taylor has found her true voice on the gorgeous, daringly intimate LADYLUCK. Held up against the glut of contemporaries spinning tired facsimiles of umpteenth-generation folk, Taylor's third solo LP is almost revelatory in its spare production. Yet songs such as "It's Time" still add an ethereal top layer to her foundation of lyrical lament, recalling the nuanced aesthetic of her earlier groups. And listeners are indeed in LUCK, as Michael Stipe co-writes and contributes one of his humblest performances in years on the album's closer, "Cartoons And Forever Plans."
