This item comes from
Quanzhou, the hometown of various traditional dramas. As a part of Quanzhou's local art forms, the puppet performances dated back to over 800 years. Now there are still some skillful masters who live on their skilled carving or tailoring glove puppets.
 
Background of this item
The glove or hand puppet, rather like those in a Punch and Judy show, is also called "bag puppet" (budai mu'ou) in Quanzhou. At present the hand puppets and marionettes shows of Quanzhou are usually accompanied by the tunes of local operas and some adopt the form of dialogue or singing and dancing.
The puppet of Quanzhou features meticulous handicraft and unique design, and is integrated in structure, exquisite in handicraft, especially in the carving of the puppet-pate, painting and decoration. The head of the puppet is remarkably clear and refined in contour, displaying a fine heritage of craftsmanship and painting style from the carving and engraving of the Tang & Song Dynasty.
