ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR MODELS

THE MARSHALL SANDERLING CATBOAT

Copyright 2008 - 2004, by Land And Sea Collection, All Rights Reserved

Here is a dandy little ship that you will be proud to own. It is our new model of the well loved Marshall 18 Sanderling Catboat, a design that has been in continuous production since the 1960's.

She is built using the same quality plank on bulkhead construction as are all our models. And you will see she is a perfect reproduction of this great class. The Marshall 18 is a stellar addition to the famous American designed vessels for which we are becoming noted.

The model features a beautifully shaped hull with plumb bow and huge barndoor rudder hung off the transom, glistening in white enamel, red boot top, and green bottom paint. Her mast, boom and gaff sparkle in varnish. Decks and cabin  are covered in silk and painted tan to look like the canvas used on the real boats, The rigging is authentic down to the last detail. Mounted on three brass finials and varnished wood base, she makes an incomparable model. A perfect addition to your home, den or office.

Modeled after a small catboat, she is a big model. 23" overall, 39" tall (base to the top of mast) with a beam of 9"

Everything about this model is exceptional. I hesitate to use the term, but this is a near museum quality model, at an unrealistically low price. If you've been browsing on the internet, you will be hard pressed to find something that represents boats that are North American in design, and are executed as finely overall. You can spend a lot more money for so called "museum quality" detailing, but you can get the same satisfaction from our new line of moderately priced, high quality models.

In addition to the Marshall 18, make sure to inquire about two different sizes of the Schooner Bluenose, a Friendship sloop, Schooner America, the much admired Herreshoff 12.5, the Schooner Adventuress, J Class Rainbow, and  also the NEW Lumber Schooner WAWONA and ocean racer Dorade. Please tell us which ones you'd like to see at auction.

As a retired professional mariner and collector myself, I see many models that are sold at give away prices, and when you look at them closely, you can see why. They are not true to the original and are mostly of foreign vessels. We are in the process of changing that by providing high quality models of boats known and loved by American sailors at a reasonable price,  that will give you lasting enjoyment, and pride of ownership.

CATBOAT HISTORY: Catboats started out as work boats. According to marine historian Howard I. Chapelle, beamy, single-sailed center boarders with half-decked hulls and barn door rudders began to appear in America around 1840, when, for the first time, there was sufficient demand to make fishing from small boats profitable. Sailed mostly in Lower New York Harbor and on Cape Cod Bay, cats fished, freighted, ferried, and packeted for decades. Their simplicity, stability, and shallow draft made them versatile, and their efficiency and ease of handling made them popular. In the 1880s and ‘90s, catboat racing flourished, especially around New York. In that Gilded Age, unlimited “sandbaggers” with huge sail area and live ballast crew who moved from side to side with each tack to keep the boats upright. The Marshall 18, has that same expansive sail area for her short length and large barndoor rudder which helps her from heading up in a fresh breeze.

MARSHALL SANDERLING 18:                                             SANDERLINGS   close hauledSanderlings close hauled

In 1962 Breck Marshall undertook an exhaustive study to recreate the best of the catboat designs. That same year saw the first SANDERLING built, using the modern-day fiberglass materials for her hull, deck, and cabin construction. The results have been boats enjoyed by today's families for daysailing, racing, or extensive coastal cruises. For over 30 years, The Marshall Company's SANDERLING  has been a leader in the industry and it is said that their quality is virtually the same as the specifications laid down by Breck Marshall.
