This is an original 11" by 14" title lobby card movie poster for the 1940 wacky western MGM comedy Go West, starring the three Marx Brothers! Groucho, Chico, and Harpo back once again! Some background on Go West, An interesting time in the career of the zany Marx Brothers, after making Duck Soup and being released by Paramount Pictures, Irving Thalberg brought the Marxes to MGM, still the zany comedy team of Groucho, Chico, and Harpo, but put into a more traditional plot setup involving the most unlikely place you'd ever find the wacky Marxes, THE OPERA, in a Night at the Opera with tested comedy routines thanks to their road tour working out the creative concepts of George S. Kaufmann and Morrie Ryskind, and arguably the best comedy the Marx Brothers ever made, the funniest comedy! And so it was sequel time, this time A Day at the Races, Groucho as Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush, horse doctor trying to be real doctor to Margaret Dumont, Chico as go-to guy at the Standish Sanitarium, Harpo as horse Jockey Punchy and rider of High-Hat, all the Marxes back along with Allan Jones, Maureen O'Sullivan and it's off to the racetrack in this worthy sequel to A Night at the Opera, and the last of the truly great Marx Brothers comedies! But sadly Irving Thalberg passed away, and the Marx Brothers lost their champion! After their one picture cameo in Room Service, the Marx Brothers came back to MGM for three films, each one with something worthy to it, but no Night at the Opera and Day at the Races! But what to make after At The Circus! How about Go West!
1940 Go West, inspired by Horace Greeley who said GO WEST YOUNG MAN and the story of the three men who made him sorry he said it, that being Groucho as S. Quentin Quale joined by Joe and Rusty Panello aka Chico and Harpo who join forces to save the deed to Dead Man's Gulch, culminating in one way out train chase worthy of the Marx Brothers!
Lobby cards were issued way back when to movie theatre in sets of 8 to help market and promote the film. And card #1 of the 8 card set is the title card, most popular with collectors because it features a miniature version of the onesheet art! Featuriing the terrific likenesses of the Line King Al Hirschfeld who in 1940 was designing movie poster for MGM! this one is in generally very good to fine condition for a vintage title card, corner tackholes, top left corner torn, some border smudging in spots i.e. bottom left corner, other smudges/nits, images are TERRIFIC, overall a great vintage title card!
