MELLOTRON M400 #908
WITH PROTECTOMUFF COVER AND 2nd TAPE FRAME
PERFECT WORKING ORDER
- WILL PLAY "RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX"
I'm not going to go into the history of this instrument, i.e., used by the Beatles, Moody Blues, etc., etc. If you're looking at this, you already know what it is. If you need more information, please see my work, The Mellotron Book (artistpro/Hal Leonard publications), available on amazon.com, jklutherie.com, and even eBay (shameless plug!).
Mellotron M400 #908 was built in 1973 by Streetly Electronics, per Streetly's records, and purchased by me in 2002. As with the previous owner, #908 has been kept in a climate-controlled, smoke free studio environment. It's in magnificent condition internally and externally, unlike almost every other 400 we've seen on eBay that sold for $3K-4K and still needed several thousand dollars worth of parts and a lot of time and patience . #908 has no funky paint job, has no holes, gouges, or cigarette burns, is neither a Sound Sales bodge nor EMI monstrosity, and needs no new parts to get it up to specs. It will play "right out of the box" and perfect for stage, studio, and/or living room. By comparison, a new MkVI will run you at least $6800. and an M4000 somewhere in the neighborhood of $12K (both not including shipping and the wait time).
Some particulars:
- SMS2 motor controller from Streety replaced CMC-10 card
- headblock aligned by Streetly
- new headblock-to-preamp wiring (no screech!)
- nicely finished in a dark Walnut stain (by a previous owner)
- low-noise mod done before CMC replacement
- pitch pot replaced by Markus; volume and tone pots replaced with high precision parts from mellotron.com
- gold-tinted control panel (original silver panel included)
- MkVI control knobs (original vol-tone-pitch knobs included)
- black cheek blocks and control panel block for that pseudo-MkII look
- tape frame with MkII 3 Violins / MkII Brass / 8-Voice Choir. NOTE: this is one of the older tape frames that has the MkII-style rollers
and MkII-style tape hold-down bars (not the circular screws in later frames). You should be able to see these in the pics.
- 2nd tape frame with Medieval Woodwinds / Italian Accordion (for those "Peak Hour" moments) / French Horn
- 2nd tape frame has no thumb screws (not present at purchase). A set is available from Markus at mellotron.com for $64.00 US.
This was never a problem since #908 never left the studio.
- Protectomuff cover in excellent condition
- given a clean bill of health by Markus Resch of mellotron.com when he visited my studio
- copy of the M400 Service Manual (not the little booklet, the full service manual)
Excerpts of recordings made with this Mellotron are available upon request.
#908 is located in my studio in El Cajon California (20 min. east of downtown San Diego). Please feel free to email me with any questions.
Would prefer local pickup. Shipping is included in the "Buy-It-Now" price and will be shipped via the professional musical instrument shippers, Rock-it Cargo, anywhere in the lower 48.
