Great tunes, exciting images and lively comedy. Forget about todays "music video revolution." Theyve done it all before - and you can even understand the lyrics!
.NRA OFFICIAL FEATURETTE (1933-USA). Blantantly propagandistic pitch for FDRs recovery program, featuring the "eminent authority on the NRA," JIMMY DURANTE, in a rousing song: "Step out in front, get back of the President - and give a man a job!" The NRAs duration wasnt as long as Durantes nose, but you cant blame the Schnozz for not trying!
.APPLE BLOSSOM TIME (1941-USA). The MEN and MAIDS OF MELODY provide beautiful harmonies on this all-time favorite, ending with a dramatized scene (a wedding) to illustrate the lyrics.
.CARLE COMES CALLING (1947-USA). With FRANKIE CARLE, His Piano and His Orchestra. Like the modem music videos, this scintillating short uses unusual camera angles, lighting effects, split screens and rhythmic cuts to accompany musical numbers, including Carles jazzy versions of Chopin, Mozart and "La Paloma" and songs by GREG LAWRENCE and Carles daughter MARJORIE HUGHES.
.MUSIC MELODIES ON PARADE (1936-USA). ANDRƒ KOSTELANETZ with His Radio Orchestra and Choir perform song hits from the movies. Vocals by MARY EASTMAN. Includes well-integrated clips from some very funny movies.
.A LESSON IN LOVE (1931-USA). The boop-a-doop girl, HELEN KANE, attends a psychology class on the science of love and gets fresh with her stuffy professor, who tells her to take arsenic instead of psychology. Later, at a college dance, the prof admits that hes crazy about her, but cant find the right words, so Helen takes over with a strange song ("I love myself because you love me..."). Therell never be a voice like this again!6.MELODIES THAT LINGER (1941,1946-USA). a. NUMBER TEN LULLABY LANE, sung by MARLYN STUART, with the song continuing between present day and flashback sequences - a forerunner of modern music video techniques! b. A LOVER IS BLUE, performed by clarinetist TOMMY REYNOLDS, his orchestra and singer PHYLLIS LANE. c. PENTHOUSE SERENADE. Elevator operator JOHNNY DOWNS and housemaid GALE STORM take a ride up to the penthouse, where he sings ("Just picture a penthouse way up in the sky..."). They conclude with a tap dance. Did you know that "My Little Margie" had such good legs?
.STRICTLY G.I. (c. 1944-USA)."A photographic report of an Armed Forces Radio Service Program, "G.I. Journal." The show is in the form of a "radio newspaper," with editor-in-chief KAY KYSER receiving reports from the front, from nutty correspondents JERRY COLONNA and ISH KIBIBBLE. The "Editor of Letters Overseas," Iovely LINDA DARNELL, about to go on tour introduces her replacement, vivacious LUCILLE BALL. Kay confesses that he loves Lucy! Colonna, camouflaged as a tree, says "Lassie, go home!" MEL BLANC is hilarious as stuttering Sad Sack and pin-up girl GEORGIA CARROLL sings.59 minutes total
