Reproduction of an early 18th century personal hand warmer. Blue floral design, Yellow spine, decorated with a charming sentiment... "The Gift is Small, Good Will is All." Personal hand warmers were filled with warming spirits and carried close to the body for warmth. BRAND/MAKER: Reproduction piece from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. SIZE: 3.25" X 5" CONDITION: XLNT. No cracks, chips or breaks. Very minor crazing. NOTE(S): Quoted directly friom a card supplied by the Metropolitam Museum of Art about this piece... "Book Bottle, English (Lambeth), 1st Half of the 18th Century" "The original ceramic book bootle was made in Lambeth, near London. It is inscribed "The Gift is Small, Good Will is All" and was used as a hand warmer. The leaf and flower decoration, painted with simple, bold strokes, is typical of English delftware of the early 18th century This repoduction, like the original in the Museum's collection is tin glazed earthenware. Each piece is individually striated and the yellow borders are painted by hand." "The original was donated to the Museum in 1937.
