ABOUT IRISH DRESDEN:
Irish Dresdens are handcrafted collectable figurines decorated in lace and fine porcelain. During the latter part of the 19th century, Anton Mueller founded the firm "Mueller-Volkstedt" in Germany. As the factory became more established and well known, Dresden figurines found their way all over the world. Unfortunately, the factory was totally destroyed during World War II. The present owner and niece of Mueller, Johanna Saar, inherited the destroyed grounds. Her husband rebuilt the factory in 1945. However, just as the factory began to do well again, the Saar family was forced to leave their hometown of Volkstedt, Germany. They chose Ireland for the future development of their fine lace and porcelain figurines. All figurines and gifts bear the original backstamp - the crown and the initials MV (Mueller-Volkstedt), with the words "Irish Dresden".
PRODUCTION:
The production process of the Dresden figurines begins with a design in modeling clay from which a master mould is made. Special formulated porcelain slip is poured into working forms created from the first mould. The various parts of the figurine are then assembled to the original design. The figurine is air-dried and then fired. Real lace is then dipped into porcelain clay and used to dress the figurines with characteristic ruffles and frills. They are then glazed and fired for a second time. During this process the material burns away, leaving the exquisite delicate lace pattern in porcelain. The figurines are then hand painted before the third and final firing.
