It was December 1, 1900. John Hossack, a prosperous Iowa farmer, was found dead in his own home, murdered in his bed, with his own ax. The suspect: his wife, Margaret Hossack, who was arrested soon after the body was found. She claimed she was innocent, and it was easy to believe, considering the violent nature of the crimes. In such a small, rural community, who would think a woman capable of something so terrible? Yet, she showed no emotion. There were no tears, and there appeared to be no regret. This lack of emotion made the possibility of a heinous crime well within her means. Plus, there were the rumors of abuse within the household, giving Margaret motive in the eyes of the prosecution and the jury. Midnight Assassin tells the tale of this trial. Authors Patricia Bryan and Thomas Wolf spent the better part of a decade researching the crime, the trial, and the outcome, in an effort to put together a realistic and accurate picture of the Hossack murder. For these authors, Midnight Assassin is the story of a woman punished not for a crime, but for her character: a character that brought nothing but suspicion and prejudice in the courtroom
