"jewelry is supposed to reflect the inner nature of a woman, not the outer status of a man"
- vivianna torun bülow-hübe
vivianna torun bülow-hübe (1927-2004): the woman who made silver sensuous
torun was the first female jewelry designer to gain international fame her unique and highly artistic creations are both archetypical and boundlessly innovative
born in malmö, sweden in 1927, torun was raised in a family of artists from her father - the malmö director of town planning - she inherited a degree of rational thinking and technical ability from her mother who was a sculptress she inherited an unbridled imagination, spontaneity and inventiveness to torun's mother nothing was impossible and she imparted this attitude to all of her children
it is a search for the source, for the origin, for the simple and the natural that impels torun's creative work inspired by the art of african, oceanic and egyptian cultures, she carefully considers both the form and the function of every piece of jewelry she makes, her philosophy is, that what is functional is also beautiful
her innermost convictions override any concession to fashion or fads, which may explain the aura of strength and clarity that emanates from her creations
among torun's most famous creations are her mobile neck sculpture which swings freely about its own axis when suspended and the open-sided numberless wristwatch
a trademark is her folded figure-of-eight motif
"a swirl is a movement that penetrates all of nature, even the human body. that is why balanced, swirling shapes give such a harmonious impression", she has said
her early creations anticipated a new era
in france where torun worked from 1956-68 she developed the idea that her jewelry pieces should be "sensual body sculptures" inspired by the contours of the female body
among her famous clients in this period were billie holiday, ingrid bergman, brigitte bardot, picasso and duke ellington
torun has also lived and worked in sweden, germany and indonesia, and her stay in each place has constituted a distinct stylistic period of her work
in 1967, the georg jensen silver smithy incorporated torun's work into the firm by taking over her entire french workshop production torun was thus involved with a firm whose founder had as great a passion for silver as her own
like her, georg jensen originally created his jewelry for people who valued the beauty and design of a handcrafted object more than the luxurious material in itself
one of the first torun prototypes that the georg jensen silversmiths produced in 1967 was an open bangle watch that has since been hailed as "the first modern jewelry watch"
torun describes her watch for georg jensen as a "timeless timepiece" "a watch should not make us prisoners of time, but liberate us," she explains
vivianna torun's artistic volition reaches beyond the merely decorative
she seeks the quintessential form, its intrinsic meaning and in the absolute sincerity of this quest lies her independence and integrity
like the painter cézanne, she has stuck to her own personal themes, deepened and refined them right up until her death in 2004, she remained ever faithful to her aesthetics of simplicity, functionality and meaning
throughout her life, vivianna torun won numerous awards for her outstanding artistic achievements
