MODERNIST CLOWN PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING BY ETIENNE RET
Etienne (Mr.) Ret (1900-1996)
Currently, I am having my "Magnificent May" sale! This is one of the many important paintings included in this two-session sale.
The painting is 100% guaranteed, as described. It was originally purchased from a major auction house.
Etienne Ret's stylized portraits are quite nostalgic. Often, they picture ordinary people, doing "ordinary" things. Ret's intention was not to focus on the event, but to portray the subject's emotion. In this painting, the subject matter could very easily be a self portrait.
Ret's paintings used to be more accessible. Now, with his paintings being in (at least) 5 museums, it is much more difficult finding his original paintings.
If you are unfamilar with Etienne Ret's biography, I would like to share with you the following from "AskART":
Painter. Born in Bourbonnais, France on Jan. 6, 1900. Ret graduated from the College of Mesnieres and completed military service in 1924. He then began formal art training in Paris in the ateliers of Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallieres, and at Ecole des Beaux Arts and Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. His book of poetry, Blindmans Bluff, was a prize winner in 1929. Ret exhibited in London and Paris before settling in Hollywood in 1934. He taught at the Choulnard Art School and was active in Los Angeles through the late 1950s. He died in Europe on June 21, 1996. Member: Calif. WC Society. Exh: De Young Museum, 1943 (self-portrait). In: San Diego Museum; De Young Museum; Pasadena Art Inst.; Santa Barbara Museum. WWC 1942; WWAA 1947-59; SS."
This oil on board (mixed with newspaper and possibly goauche/watercolor etc...) measures 27.25" by 22.25", with its' frame. The actual painting measures 24" by 18.5" (sight). The painting is signed by Etienne (upper left) and inscribed "Paris 1966", on the upper right. Please note that Etienne Ret signed his paintings both, "Etienne" and "Etienne Ret".
The painting is in good overall condition.
The frame is probably the original frame. The wood part of the frame is in good, overall condition. The liner has some tears and does not look good (in my opinion). These tears do not effect the painting.
When examining the painting under the ultraviolet light, I did not find any evidence of restoration. The signature is original to the painting and it did not flouresce under the ultraviolet light.
Ret's paintings have been exhibited in "The DeYoung Museum" and "The Santa Barbara Museum". Hopefully, this original painting will be good enough for your own personal collection!
Good luck on becoming the winning bidder of this modernist oil painting by Mr. Etienne Ret.
Please note that this frame is wood and the Mixed Media is protected by glass. This is the reason for the higher shipping cost.

I love my international bidders. However, U.S. law states that I must declare the actual value of any item that I sale, on the customs' forms. Unfortunately, this leaves the buyer responsible for any customs' related fees.
