Each art lesson contains some or all of the following components:
•A simple definition, explanation or history pertaining to the lesson
•Set up: Default set up is on a tray. This indicates it is not on a tray, such as on a table.
•Preparation: Any advance preparation that is required by an adult
•Supplies: A list of supples and materials needed for the art activity
•Process: This is the actual demonstration, lesson, or presentation as given to the child.
•Suggestion: A suggestion is based on personal experience in the classroom.
•Note: Based on classroom experience but is more important to be aware of than a suggestion.
•Variations: Variations of the same exercise
•Options: Other things you could do instead
•Extension: More advanced exercises or related activities
•FYI: Other information or facts for the adult to know
• a recommended book or related activity

The art lessons are given in the Montessori style- On a tray placed on the art shelf to be chosen as individual work. As with other Montessori work, the emphasis is more on process than a finished product. The demonstration is given to teach the process and use of the materials. It is important to allow the child freedom to be creative and express himself or herself as long as the materials or surroundings are not being misused. The finished product will be a true expression of the child - a unique combination of the materials, the process, and the child’s own spirit and creativity.

The art in this book was developed from fifteen years doing art with children in the Montessori classroom. The author has a BA in Studio Art with a Minor in Art History which she combined with a practical application of the Montessori method and the joy of doing art with children.
