Baillie (1761-1823), a nephew and pupil of William Hunter and the last owner of the Gold-Headed Cane (William MacMichael, 1827) wrote this first systematic textbook of morbid anatomy, originally published in 1793. An Atlas of Morbid Anatomy, originally intended to accompany the text, was published separately by Baillie in 1799-1803 (G-M 2282). Among his "Firsts" in this work, Baillie first suggested the relationship between rheumatic fever and valvular heart disease as well as giving the first clinical description of chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema (based on his autopsy of Samuel Johnson) (Major, Classic Descriptions, p. 582); he gave, also, a classic description of the lesions of pulmonary tuberculosis (G-M 3218) and the first description of gastric ulcer (G-M 3427).
