Between 1836 and 1850, noted English artist, author and world traveller William Henry Bartlett made four voyages to the United States. These journeys inspired him to produce a series of remarkable landscape illustrations which brilliantly captured the beauty, scope and grandeur of the American Northeast in the mid-nineteenth century.  He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation, travelling not just throughout Britain, but to the Americas in 1839/42. In the mid/late 1840's he travelled extensively in the Balkans and Middle East. He died of fever on board ship returning from his last trip to Israel in 1854.
