Item: THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL - MY LIFE IN GOLF by JACK NICKLAUS.

416 page hardback book (23.5cm x 16cm) published by Simon & Schuster 1969.

Content: This is a 1969 edition of The Greatest Game Of All - My Life In Golf by Jack Nicklaus.

Dust-jacket reads:

Because of his colossal power-he is the longest driver in the world-Jack Nicklaus generates for every spectator an excitement and drama unique in tournament golf. In each Nicklaus gallery, however, you will find that a high percentage of the onlookers represents the intelligentsia of golf, for the Nicklaus swing is as sound as it is powerful a favourite subject of study by the game's experts. The six chapters on instruction in this book are profusely illustrated with sequence photographs of Nicklaus in action, and they are eminently worth the attention of all serious golfers.

In The Greatest Game o f All, Nicklaus for the first time reveals his exceptional understanding of each phase of the game of golf-the subtleties as well as the fundamentals of shot-making. More than that, in his intimate and direct narrative, he leads you up the years from Scioto, where he began golf at the age of ten, and takes you right inside the fairway ropes with him as he battles the outstanding stars of the day in the big championships. You will get to know Jack Nicklaus not only as a resourceful competitor but as an honest, appealing young man with a sure sense of humour and a solid sense of values.

You will read about the great influence Bob Jones had on Nicklaus. You will learn of Nicklaus' esteem for Ben Hogan and of his close relationship with his friend and rival Arnold Palmer. Jack Grout is a name you probably don't recognise, but he was Nicklaus' first and only teacher. You will meet Jack Grout and learn the ABC's he taught his precocious young pupil-and which he continues to stress when they work together today.

Then comes the story of the present era of modern power golf and Nicklaus' special role in it. Emphasis is, of course, on the major championships (the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the P.G.A.) and the seven victories Nicklaus has scored in these events.

Part Four is the special section devoted to instruction, and it is, by itself, well worth the price of the book. And finally, in the last part of the book, the author speculates about golf-course architecture and the golf of tomorrow, giving his informed, penetrating opinions about everything and everybody on the current golf scene.

The Greatest Game o f All could well be the greatest golf book of all.

Illustrated throughout with photographs.

Additional information: Jack William Nicklaus (born January 21, 1940), also known as "The Golden Bear", is regarded by many to be the greatest professional golfer of all time. Nicklaus holds the record for the most victories in major championships. He was continuously ranked as the world's number one golfer on McCormack's World Golf Rankings from its inception in 1968 to 1977 inclusive. Having won seven professional major titles between 1962 and 1967, he would have been likely to have been considered number one in some of those years as well (a period where he and Arnold Palmer vied for that status in public acclaim). From 1978, while much younger players such as Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros came to be ranked higher than him, Nicklaus continued to regularly challenge for and indeed win major titles until 1986, representing a full quarter-century playing at the very highest level of his sport.

After winning two U.S. Amateur Championships in 1959 and 1961, and challenging for the 1960 U.S. Open, Nicklaus turned professional towards the end of 1961. The 1962 U.S. Open was both Nicklaus's first major championship win, and his first professional win. This win over Arnold Palmer began the on-course rivalry between the two. In 1966, Nicklaus won the Masters Tournament for the second year in a row, becoming the first golfer to achieve this, and also won the Open Championship, completing his career slam of major championships. After failing to win a major for two years, Nicklaus won another Open Championship in 1970.

Between 1971 and 1980, he would win a further nine major championships, as well as overtaking Bobby Jones' record of 13 major championships. At the age of 46, Nicklaus claimed his 18th and last major championship at the 1986 Masters Tournament, becoming the oldest winner of the Masters. (Julius Boros is the oldest major championship winner, having won the 1968 PGA Championship at the age of 48.) Nicklaus joined the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour) in 1990, when he became eligible, and by 1996 had won ten of the tour's tournaments, including eight of that tour's majors. He continued to play the four PGA Tour majors until 2005, when he made his final appearances at The Open Championship and the Masters Tournament.

Nicklaus has also taken part in many off-course activities, including golf course design, book writing, and running his own tournament on the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament. His golf course design company is one of the largest in the world. Nicklaus's book writing varies from instructional to autobiographical, and his book Golf My Way is considered one of the best instructional golf books of all time.
