Beautiful little etching by, Mabel Fairfax Smith Karl (American, 1901-1990); titled, "Fawn, San Diego Zoo", signed "M. Fairfax Smith" (her maiden name) and dated, "'25", in pencil by the artist, along bottom margin. No edition number is indicated. Very crisply detailed impression in excellent condition; faint matte line, one 1.5" tear at upper-left corner (see last pic) and evidence of prior mounting at the edges verso. More recently, the artwork has been professionally spot mounted to board with hinged matte. Overall w/matte = 12"H X 12.25"W Sheet size = 8 5/8"H X 10 1/8"W Sight size = 4 3/8"H X 5 1/8"W The following is from the web: Sculptor, etcher, printmaker. Born in Glendale, OR on June 27, 1901. Mabel Smith studied at the ASL of NYC. By 1919 she had settled in San Diego and established a studio on Point Loma. In 1926 she studied bronze casting with Archibald Dawson at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. About 1927 she married Fred Karl and after that time was active in both San Diego and Houston, TX until the early 1940s. Mrs. Karl died in San Diego on Nov. 14, 1990.
