Often described as "the female Cameo" - Madame Xs "Red On Black" album is nowadays indeed a hard record to find. Noted for a very dry funk production, sparse jamming and sometimes unusual instrumentation (theres a genuine, acoustic harp on the intro of the title track!), the sonic quality of the vocals somewhat foreshadows En Vogue. The single "Just That type Of Girl", alongside the B side opener "I Want Your Body" got the most air and clubplay at the time, but its the brilliant title track, "Madame X" thats the highlight of this album. Ladies funk par excellence.
