Magnificent 1892 Rare Pictorial Leather Bible – Clasps
2000 ILLUSTRATIONS (11 x 12 ½ x 4 ½) UNMARKED
You will not have many opportunities ever to own a bible like this. It is a magnificent cordovan leather pictorial bible that was printed in 1892 by the Williams and Co. of New York City New York. This company was known for its exquisite bibles and their amazing quality and attention to detail. You seldom see one ever come up for sale. The bible is held in place with two beautiful silver clasps that are in perfect working condition. This bible is arranged in parallel columns and contains both the King James and the Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments. It has 2000 scripture illustrations on steel, wood, and in colors. I have owned hundreds of rare bibles over the years and can say that these kind of bibles seldom come up for sale.
This bible is in very good condition considering that it is 116 years old. It looks like it has only been opened a few times over all of these years. There is no foxing or stains or writing anywhere in the bible. Most bibles this old have uniform age browning but this one does not. The cover is in excellent condition. All of the designs and lettering are in gilt (gold) and bright and distinct. The binding is still tight and the hinges are still in great condition which is highly unusual for a bible this big and this old. These bibles were made for display and not meant to be opened repeatedly for daily ready. Many times when you see a bible this big and this old the hinges have broken. When you see huge bibles come up for sale the seller will often say that the bible has been “repaired” and ready for another 100 years. That is like saying a car has been wrecked and has a salvaged title but it is now worth one that has never been in a wreck. This one is all original and the covers still secure.
Another common problem of bibles from this age is that the lettering and designs are badly faded. This one is still bright. Both title pages are in place and are in great condition and feature both black and red lettering. There are 2000 beautiful illustrations scattered throughout the bible with many that are in color. There are also several colored maps included. All of the bible text is present. The pages are very clean and white and unmarked. Onion skin paper still protects almost all of the illustrations. The bible is huge measuring 11” x 12 ½” x 4 ¼ ”. There is a beautiful family section, colored temperance pledge page and a family portrait section in the back. These are all blank. Many large bibles of the day have family sections that are written in. Any time you find a bible with no marks know that it is worth much more than those that are marked or that have family names included.
The dictionary states that rare means: Uncommon, unusual, exceptional, atypical, extraordinary and infrequent. Using those definitions this bible should be considered very rare because of its special designs and features. Trust me. This bible would be classified in mint condition for its age. If this bible were not in such good condition I would love to take it apart and put all of the special features in a file for reference. There is an unbelievable amount of biblical research included. To say they don’t make them like they used to is a huge understatement. It is truly amazing the effort that went into producing this magnificent bible. Consider all the special features and imagine the attention that this bible would draw if you displayed it in a prominent place in your home or office.

Well you get the picture…
Rare bibles have gone up dramatically in price over the years and make great investments. Most people put very little money into material possessions that go up in value. Of course that is because so few things actually go up in value. As you look around at your material possessions ask yourself how many items that you own are going up in value? For example is your computer going up or down in value? How about your car, vacuum clean, blender, play station, Ipod, cell phone, TV, dish washer, microwave, bicycle, etc? Most banks are now paying peanuts on savings accounts. With inflation we can now add our savings accounts to the depreciating asset column. You can just about name things that tend to go up in value on your hands and toes. Let’s see there are homes, land, some stocks, precious metals, antiques and….Let’s see…With rare bibles you not only get to enjoy displaying them in your home or office, you also get to see them go up in value. Besides money sitting in a bank or in a piece of paper representing a stock is not nearly as fun to look at. This bible can easily be passed on for another 115 years easily if it is displayed in a safe place.
