Description

The Marie Antoinette Panniers or side hoops are women's undergarments worn during the eighteenth century. Panniers/side hoops extended the width of the skirts at the side while leaving the front and back flat. This provided a flat panel where boldly scaled woven patterns or rich embroidery could be seen very vividly.The style originated in Spain during the 17th century. By mid-eighteenth century it had been developed into the robe à la française, which ensured that a woman took up three times as much space as a man and always presented very dramatic, imposing spectacle. At their most extreme, in the French court of Marie Antoinette, panniers could extend the skirt several feet at each side.

In this auction, our custom made panniers have 4 lengthy hoops of steel in double folded casings that shape the panniers.The front and back of the panniers are flat while both sides extend out to 10 to 12 inches. The panniers could be made wider, which could mean additonal cost. For wider panniers,please email us before ordering , if you need the panniers wider. Wear a petticoat over this cage to soften the bones.
