This recording received the 1998 Gramophone magazine awards for "Best Choral Recording" and "Record of the Year." In Frank Martin's long career he assimilated many musical styles, while shaping a voice that defies categorization. Perhaps the inability for listeners to pigeon-hole his style has contributed to the neglect his music has suffered outside his native Switzerland. Martin's influences were varied: Renaissance polyphony, Bach, and German Romanticism all played parts in his musical development. The 'Mass for Double Choir' certainly owes a debt to older music, but Martin's voice is strikingly original, never aping his predecessors. The influence of plainchant is there, but Martin's choral writing is more complex and filled with a sense of religious ecstasy, especially in the incandescent "Credo." The Mass is a major discovery, and the boys and men of the Westminster Cathedral Choir provide a masterful performance. Older music also provided the inspiration for the 'Messa di Requiem' of neglected contemporary composer Ildebrando Pizzetti. Pizzetti's Requiem owes little to the blood and thunder of Berlioz and Verdi, but more to plainchant and the dark polyphony of Victoria. Highly recommended for listeners who enjoy the simplicity and mysticism of Pärt and Górecki. You might not know Martin and Pizzetti now, but buy this disc and you will be grateful you made their acquaintance.
