While there was a general 'glamour' surrounding the 'Oriente' that lasted throughout the entire 19th and early 20th centuries, but no aspect of it was more provocative to Victorian society than The Harem. A constant source of conversation and speculation among both men and women of the day, it was a central theme in numerous Orientalist paintings. "the bath" was a favourite amongst all of the artists of the School, and it actually inspired an active interest in, and the establishment of, spas throughout England and Europe. Any woman daring enough to travel to these distant lands during this period would insist on experiencing the famous 'bath' and accompanying massage; nowhere is the feeling and sense of this very special ritual portrayed than in Ponsan's "Massage".
