This image is intended to be framed for public display at a school, library or business. Henson was a remarkable man whose courage and determination will always be a source of inspiration. To this day no one has even attempted to duplicate his amazing (and dangerous) 1,000 mile round trip dash over the arctic ocean to the Pole and back to land.
I made this image from three photographs and one illustration. There is no other source for this picture. The photo of Henson is derived from one in the National Archives that I re-mastered and lightly colorized his face.  Behind Henson is a map derived from Peary's The North Pole, 1910. Then I added a restored photo of the Ship Roosevelt - the vessel which allowed the expedition to start towards the Pole from the Arctic Ocean. In the lower right is the famous photo snapped by Peary at 90 degrees north. The attainment of the Pole  is of historical significance as it marks the first time men had reached an axis of the earth. Peary & Henson had succeeded, after 18 years, to achieve a goal that had cost the lives of over 400 men in centuries past.
Henson later met my father, Bradley Robinson, and together they wrote his full biography Dark Companion in 1946. I have restored both these Henson books and republished them to honor Henson and my father.

I have created a series of restored Henson & Peary images to allow schools, libraries, universities and businesses for the 100th anniversary of the North Pole discovery coming in 2009.

Matt Henson has the face of hope from a man who has inspired millions of young people to achieve their goals in life through persistence.

Young people need positive role models and Matthew Henson is one of the best!
