An abstract expressionist painting by Max Schnitzler (1903-1964) from the late 40's or early 50's...The painting is oil on stretched canvas measuring 20" X 24" and comes in a period faux chestnut frame with a label from "The Frame Shop" on sixth avenue in NYC...At some point prior to my purchase the painting was professionally lined...The painting is signed "Schnitzler" lower right...Max Schnitzler , an early friend of Gorky and de Kooning,was an underappreciated action painter working in New York City in the 1940's and 50's...He participated in the now legendary "Third Annual Exhibiton of Painting and Sculpture" held at the Stable Gallery in 1954...in 1961 MoMA acquired his painting "Number I, (1955)...Other exhibition venues include: Seattle Art Museum, Whitney Museum, Cinncinati Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, Springfield Museum of Art, Albright Art Gallery, and the Wildenstein Gallery...:I have some photostats of Exhibit catalogues listing Schnitzler with Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, and other luminaries that will accompany this painting..
