This Sample / Practice Medical Billing Exam is based on the: 2008 Certified Coding Associate  (CCA) exam as issued through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Exam. 

ANSWER KEY INCLUDED

The Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam, offered by AHIMA, is not designed to be as difficult or detailed as the CCS-P or CPC exams because it is for an associate (entry-level) position. However, it does cover a variety of issues that would be encountered in the medical office, such as regulations, DRGs, office structure, billing, and coding. It is advised that, even if a person has been working in a medical office, even coding for a short time, they enroll in several medical office courses to ensure that they have the overall big picture of the medical office.

ICD-9 Volumes 1 through 3 and CPT coding books of the current year (with start date of current year as determined by AHIMA) are allowed on this exam.

The purpose of the exam is to test memory, application, and interpretation combined into analysis of the information provided. Areas tested are health data content, requirements, and standards, to which 20 of the questions refer; clinical classification reimbursement methodologies, to which 60 of the questions refer; and information technology with healthcare delivery, to which 10 of the questions refer.

This exam contains 100 questions to be completed in 2 hours. The current passing score for the CCA examination is 58 out of 90 scored items, or approximately 64 %.

Medical Coding/Billing Work: Medical coding involves the review of medical records to determine all the procedures during a specific interval of patient care. Medical coding professionals clarify ambiguous or unclear information in a patient's record, and then allocate codes to the patient's medical record.
