Every time a patient receives health care from a doctor a record is maintained of the observations, medical or surgical interventions, medicine and treatment outcomes. This record includes information that the patient provides concerning his or her symptoms and medical history, the results of examinations, reports of X Rays and laboratory tests, diagnoses, medicines and treatment plans. Medical records and health information technicians organize and evaluate these records for completeness and accuracy.

As a technician you will be responsible to assemble patients’ health information. You will make sure that patients’ initial medical charts are complete, that all forms are completed and properly identified and signed, and that all necessary information is in the computer. You will communicate with physicians, and other health care professionals to clarify diagnoses, medicines prescribed or to obtain additional information on insurance coverage.

• According to the US Department of Labor, job prospects for technicians should be very good. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to grow much faster than average through 2014 because of rapid growth in the number of medical tests, treatments, drugs and medicines, and procedures that will be increasingly scrutinized by health insurance companies, regulators, courts, and consumers. Also, technicians will be needed to enter patient information into computer databases to comply with Federal legislation mandating the use of electronic patient records.

This course will teach you how to fill OUT Patient claims on CMS-1500 (using valid ICD-9, CPT and HCPS procedure codes) how to process outpatient, doctor's office claims for submission to insurance agencies and how to audit and review claims for accuracy and compliance. You will also learn how the insurance claim process works and the role of computers in the healthcare claim filing and servicing.
