Medieval Asian Thailand Clay Elephant Statue 130 AD!

You are considering a very attractive and rare Stoneware Elephant Figurine from Thailand, dating to the 14th-15th century.

This elephant was originally found at the Si Satchanalai Kiln Site. It is speculated by academics that this Kiln was associated with the manufacture of religious objects.

The curving trunk and extended head enliven the brown-celadon glazed elephant.

In Buddhist art the Elephant was particularly revered. There are many Indian derived customs and beliefs in Thai life relating to the Elephant. The white elephant for example was treated as of kingly rank and believed by the Thai to be the incarnation of a future Buddha.

The elephant was also an instrument of war as well as a symbol of sovereignty. It was also economically a major domestic asset. There were baggage elephants which could carry between 250 to 300 lbs and could cover 18 miles per day.

This particular specimen appears aroused with its head extended.

Intact, untouched; exceptional condition.

Height: 2 3/4 inches.

Length: 3 inches.

Provenance: English private collection.

Relevant literature:

Thai Ceramics. The James and Elaine Connell Collection. Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Kuala Lumpur. Oxford University Press. 1993.

I only sell well provenanced genuine, guaranteed ancient art. We have randomly performed Thermoluminescence testing on a group of these Thailand Elephants. All the TL tests have proved positive.

Good luck with this bargain no reserve auction commencing at less than 1 dollar!

MY AUTHENTICITY PLEDGE:

Whilst buying ancient art remains very pleasurable and a real "credit crunch proof" investment, it is vitally important that your purchase is authentic. Artifactsuk Ltd. employs a number of experienced consultants who specialize in authenticating ancient art to offer you the necessary protection, and in addition employs, wherever pertinent and economically feasible, scientific tests to confirm this. The most important such test is thermoluminescence or otherwise known as the TL test. TL is very useful and fairly accurate or dating terracotta (clay) statues and other ceramics. This test was developed and pioneered by Oxford University, and we employ these facilities whenever necessary. TL cannot date a non ceramic item or an unfired ceramic. Radiocarbon (C14) is the only other acknowledged scientific test which can date organic material such as wood, leather and paper. However it must be remembered that both these tests are expensive and therefore cost prohibitive for the smaller, less expensive items(cost of TL about $350). All my artefacts carry a money back guarantee regarding authenticity. If an acknowledged expert such as an auction house specialist, or an appropriately applied TL test ever challenges the authenticity of one of the items or coins purchased from me, then I give a written guarantee to compensate such a buyer in full. This written pledge is stated on all my COAs. Every item sold is accompanied by such a COA. Do not buy from anyone who is not prepared to give you a similar pledge. Beware - probably the most commonly faked items are coins, Apulian and Chinese ceramics!
